Construction begins in A.D. 713, near the Chinese city of Leshan, at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers. The statue is 71 metres tall and represents a seated Maitreya Buddha; it was begun by the monk Haitong during the Tang Dynasty.
